Sparks are StudySparks' built-in currency. Students earn them by studying and spend them on household privileges you control. Here is how the whole system works.
How Students Earn Sparks
Sparks are awarded when students complete their daily study goals and parent-verified assignments. Parents maintain full authority over goal completion and spark verification.
- Daily Target Completion — When a student meets their configured daily study minute target, their progress is recorded toward their daily streak and Spark reward.
- Parent Approval & Verification — Submitted self-study tasks and completed study sessions enter the Parent Dashboard for review before Sparks are released.
- Streak Progression — Maintaining consistent study streaks unlocks milestone badges and keeps students motivated to hit their daily targets day after day.
- Per-Student Goals — Each student profile has an independent daily target tailored to their age, grade level, and study workload.
Managing the Rewards Catalog
Your rewards catalog provides built-in defaults alongside family-created rewards. Default rewards are permanent system standards, while visibility is customized per child.
- Pre-Loaded Default Catalog — StudySparks comes pre-loaded with household defaults: chore passes, extra screen time, proofreading passes, and special privileges.
- Per-Student Visibility Toggles — Enable or disable any reward independently for each child. Disabling a reward hides it from that specific student's storefront without affecting their siblings.
- System Default Protection — Default system rewards cannot be deleted. They remain permanently available in your catalog to toggle on or off at any time.
- Parent-Only Governance — Students can view active rewards and submit redemption requests from their storefront, but only parents can modify catalog rules.
Creating Custom Rewards
Beyond system defaults, parents can create custom household incentives tailored to each child — special outings, favorite meals, or weekend activities.
- Custom Title & Description — Name the incentive and provide clear instructions so your student knows exactly what they are working toward.
- Custom Spark Cost & Emoji Icon — Assign any custom Spark cost and pick a fun emoji (like 🍕 or 🌮) to personalize the reward card.
- Per-Student Visibility — Like default items, custom rewards can be toggled on or off for individual children via the student visibility toggles.
- One-Click Deletion (Custom Only) — Unlike protected system defaults, any custom reward you create includes a trash icon so you can permanently remove it at any time.
Approving & Fulfilling Redemptions
When a student redeems Sparks, the request enters your real-time dashboard queue for parent verification before the reward is granted.
- In-Dashboard Queue — Pending redemptions appear directly in your Parent Portal under the Approvals queue for quick review.
- Approve or Reject — Review the redemption request. Approving confirms the reward, while rejecting cancels the request and refunds the Sparks back to the student's balance.
- Fulfillment Tracking — Mark approved rewards as fulfilled once delivered in real life, keeping a clean record of active versus completed rewards.
- Full Redemption History — Every approved, fulfilled, and refunded redemption is logged per student profile for clear household transparency.
Sparks never expire
Sparks never expire. Spark balances carry over indefinitely, allowing students to save for bigger goals. Parents can view real-time balances and manage redemptions directly from the Parent Portal.
